Over a dozen ELO members joined almost 6000 other orienteers from around Europe and the world from 1st to 8th August. The combination of two major events made it Britain’s biggest ever assembly of orienteers. The usual races of the biennial 6 Days programme were interspersed with the various World Orienteering Championship events at a range of challenging venues in the Inverness area.

Statistically our best 6 Days performer was Sheila Strain who came 14th overall in her category. That may not sound terribly impressive until you realise that most of those beating Sheila were international entrants from strong orienteering areas such as Scandinavia. And that there were over 150 competitors in Sheila’s age category.

Our other stand-out performance was by Finlay Hayes who is new to orienteering and was getting his first taste of a big multi-day event. After a disappointing first race Finlay grew in confidence and steadily improved his performances commendably over each of the next few days.

Off the course Robin Strain was kept very busy by his responsibilities for the WOC results service. And Trina Rogerson and family kindly hosted a social evening which gave a welcome taste of home comforts to those of us who were living under canvas for the week.
