Butterdean Wood Saturday 29th November 2025

Butterdean Woods

Butterdean is near Gladsmuir village between Tranent and Haddington. It is a flat wood densely planted with conifers and patches of birch, beech and ash. There is a good track and path network – and some animal sculptures. It is managed by the Woodland Trust and East Lothian Council.

Please note …

  • slightly earlier Start times to allow for courses closing at 15:30
  • we are parking on the east side of the wood at Alba Trees – see detailed directions below.

This will be ELO’s club championship for 2025 – more details below.

General Information

Type of event:

Local event in the East of Scotland Orienteering Association (ESOA) series

Terrain:

  • A flat wood mainly made up of conifers with patches of birch, beech and ash. There is an extensive network of tracks and footpaths. The wood is varied in density with some runnable areas and other patches being very challenging to penetrate.
  • Even at this time of year some brambles are present so leg cover is strongly recommended for all.
  • Several former coal pits within the woods are clearly fenced off and must not be entered.Fenced off coal pit
  • Do not enter the badger sett area in the west of the wood. This is shown as OOB (out of bounds) on all maps but is not marked on the ground.
  • Two fenced fields have been planted with saplings. They have gates and mown paths through them. Do not cross the field fences.Field fence
  • Low wicker fences are being constructed around new ponds in the north of the map. Please take care not to cause any damage if you cross them. Wicker fence
  • All courses include ditch crossings via narrow wooden bridges which are studded for grip but can still be slippery when wet.
  • Main paths are well mapped but lesser paths are being created by dog walkers and some older paths are disappearing due to fallen tree blockages.
  • At this time of year some paths are disguised by a carpet of fallen leaves.
  • Outdoor education classes have created many simple shelters in the woods. Only the two largest of these are mapped – see example below with A4 sheet for scale.Large shelter - mapped

Other Users:

The area is very well used by the general public including dog walkers and families. Please respect their right to be there at the same time as you are orienteering.

Dogs:

The area is well used by dog walkers so dogs are welcome to come with orienteers.

Toilets:

Portaloos will be available near Registration at the Alba Trees car park. The nearest public toilets are in Haddington and in Tranent.

Accessibility:

The bigger tracks are good but most of the smaller paths have sections which are muddy and/or very uneven with roots so the courses are not suitable for buggies.
